The UK battery regulation 2009/890 is the implementation of the EU Directive 2006/66/EC which aims to minimise the negative impacts of batteries and accumulators on the environment.
The regulations define the 3 battery types, within each category there are a number of different battery chemistries:

An automotive battery is one which is used for the starting or ignition of the engine of a vehicle, or for providing power for any lighting used by such a vehicle.

Portable Batteries
Portable Batteries
A portable battery or battery pack is a battery which meets all the following criteria:
- Sealed
- Weighs 4kg or below
- Not an automotive or industrial battery
- Not designed exclusively for industrial or professional use

Industrial Batteries
An industrial battery or battery pack is one which is
- Designed exclusively for industrial or professional uses
- Used as a source of power for propulsion in an electric vehicle
- Unsealed, but is not an automotive battery
- Sealed, but not a portable battery
- Can be less than 4kg
